Simplifying String Catalog Workflows with Localizr

19 March 2025

Modern application development almost invariably involves working with localisation to make an app accessible to as many users as possible. Since 2023, Apple-platform developers have had String Catalogs to manage this process with all languages centralised in a single document. Whilst String Catalogs represent a huge improvement over the previous method of dealing with separate strings and stringsdict files for each language, they can be difficult to work with when dealing with strings that vary by pluralisation or device. This is just one of the areas that Localizr addresses to make your localisation workflow a more pleasant and productive experience.

Plural Variation

The Localizr app modifying a string to be varied by a single plural.

Creating a simple plural-variation for a string with one pluarlisable token is a breeze - simply select the token and create a variation. This can also be done using the app's "String" main menu item.

But what about strings with more than one pluralisable token? No problem - we use the same interaction to create multiple plural substitutions:

String Previews

Once you've created these variations you'll want to check that they read correctly. In Xcode, this involves building your app, navigating to the place where the string is used, and checking it with different input values. In Localizr, we can simply open the String Preview panel and check how our string looks with whatever input we like - no need to build and run anything:

Using the Grammatical Inflection feature introduced in iOS 15 and macOS 12 to reduce the number of plural variations that you have to provide manually? No problem - Localizr will preview these too:
